Overview

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science provides a strong professional and industry focus. Students obtain a solid foundation in both biological and medical sciences, and practical experimentation through extensive theoretical knowledge and advanced laboratory skills.

This course provides in-depth understanding of how the body works at the cellular level, what causes disease and the techniques of laboratory diagnosis of disease, including the expanding area of molecular-based diagnostic techniques. Students gain the underpinning knowledge and laboratory skills required to participate in research aimed at the prevention or treatment of disease.

The opportunity is also there for students to undertake an internship as part of their course, either on campus in UTS research laboratories or externally, to gain first-hand work experience in the field of Biomedical Science.

Career options

Career options include positions in hospital laboratories, diagnostic medical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, biomedical and biotechnology industries. Students may pursue a career in biomedical research in hospitals or other research institutes. Biomedical science also provides excellent preparation for entry into postgraduate degrees in medicine and allied health professions.

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Apply: Use contemporary technologies for the collection and analysis of data and apply evidence-based practice at all levels of laboratory investigation.
1.2 Analyse: Inspect and understand normal physiology and how it differs during disease processes.
1.3 Synthesise: Adapt disciplinary skills and techniques to other disciplines and other areas of study, in particular, the specialisations of cellular pathology, microbiology, and host responses or biochemistry and molecular diagnostics.
2.1 Apply: Employ robust scientific method in the investigation of disease and undertake laboratory work based on world best practice.
2.2 Analyse: Be guided by the current literature to critically appraise published information and recognize gaps of knowledge in the field.
2.3 Synthesise: Critically discriminate facts to synthesise significant findings from a range of data types.
3.1 Apply: Demonstrate familiarity in established techniques, while also having an awareness of new technologies and modern instrumentation, considering the appropriate quality control measures at all stages of the diagnostic process.
3.2 Analyse: Engage in work practices that demonstrate an understanding of health and safety requirements, good ethical conduct, risk management, organisation skills, record keeping and the regulatory framework of specific laboratory, especially in relation to specialised discipline areas.
3.3 Synthesise: Articulate the role of science within a global culture and explain complex issues where the methods and findings of science are relevant.
4.1 Apply: Demonstrate the use of appropriate tools and an aptitudes to create a flexible and adaptable approach to ongoing learning.
4.2 Analyse: Demonstrate creative and lateral thinking within a structured discipline by extending the principles of biomedical science to a broader context.
4.3 Synthesise: Confidently engage in individual and independent learning strategies, and be able to contribute to a team to deliver meaningful outcomes.
5.1 Apply: Use a variety of tools, such as written reports, oral and visual presentations, graphical or statistical analysis in both lay and professional settings.
5.2 Analyse: Recognize the audience and be able to communicate with a diversity of audiences by accurately using plain, professional, and where necessary, specialist language in the communication of ideas.
5.3 Synthesise: Develop the capacity to disseminate scientific information in the most appropriate manner in a variety of professional contexts.
6.1 Apply: Identify how diagnostic procedures impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
6.2 Analyse: Examine the unique health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
6.3 Synthesise: Incorporate knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities when engaging as professionals in the health sector, as technicians, practitioners and colleagues.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Pathway course

Successful completion of the UTS College:

  • Diploma of Engineering with a WAM of at least 70 per cent without any failures guarantees entry into the course with 36 credit points recognition of prior learning
  • Diploma of Science (Life Science) guarantees entry into the course with 48 credit points of recognition of prior learning.

Assumed knowledge

Mathematics; any two units of English; any two units of Science.

Chemistry; Mathematics Extension 1 is recommended.

Course duration and attendance

Students can complete the course on a three-year, full-time or six-year, part-time basis. Part-time students are required to attend some classes in daytime hours.

Course structure

The course comprises a total of 144 credit points, made up of 96 credit points of compulsory core subjects, a specialised 24-credit-point sub-major, and 24 credit points of electives. The electives enable students to increase their expertise in other areas of science, broaden their horizons in other disciplines in the University, engage in an internship program or go on global exchange.

Industrial training/professional practice

Students studying this course have an opportunity to undertake an internship subject and receive academic credit for their placement off campus (an external business or research institute) or on campus (UTS research institutes or departments), in a capacity relevant to their academic studies.
